Mumbai’s daily commuters are likely to experience significant inconvenience as Harbour Line mumbai local train services between Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Goregaon are set to be suspended in the coming months. Senior railway authorities have confirmed that the shutdown plan has been approved, with execution expected to begin shortly, affecting thousands of passengers who rely on the route every day.

The suspension forms part of Western Railway’s large-scale infrastructure modernisation programme aimed at improving operational capacity and easing congestion. Under this initiative, the fifth and sixth rail lines are being developed to enhance efficiency across the network.

At present, construction of the additional tracks is underway between Mumbai Central and Borivali along the Harbour Line corridor. However, limited available space has posed engineering challenges in certain sections. To overcome this, Western Railway has planned the demolition and reconstruction of the railway bridge located between Bandra and Khar, which will create the necessary clearance for the new tracks.

Due to this critical bridge work, Harbour Line local train operations between Goregaon and Bandra will be completely suspended for nearly 90 consecutive days. During this period, commuters travelling from Goregaon and surrounding stations will be required to use alternative transport options or different railway routes to reach Bandra and connect onwards to the Central Railway network. Meanwhile, restricted local train services will continue to run between Bandra and CSMT, providing limited relief to passengers.

Railway officials have stated that the broader objective is to complete the fifth and sixth line expansion across the entire Western Railway network by December 2027.
