The United States has seized two so-called “ghost fleet” oil tankers, including a Russian-flagged vessel linked to Venezuela, following a pursuit that stretched over several weeks. The action marks a renewed push by Washington to crack down on illicit maritime operations used to move sanctioned oil.

Multi-Week Pursuit Ends in Seizure

According to U.S. authorities, the tankers were part of a covert network operating with transponders switched off and ownership details obscured—tactics commonly used to evade international monitoring. One of the seized ships was flying a Russian flag and had been under close surveillance before being intercepted.

Enforcing the Blockade

The United States reiterated that it is actively enforcing a blockade against all dark fleet vessels involved in the illegal transportation of Venezuelan oil. Officials say such operations are designed to generate funds through unlawful channels and divert resources away from the Venezuelan people.

Only Lawful Energy Trade Allowed

U.S. officials emphasized that only legitimate and lawful energy commerce will be permitted. Any oil shipments that violate sanctions or operate outside approved frameworks will be subject to enforcement actions, including seizure.

Message to Illicit Operators

The latest operation sends a clear signal to operators attempting to bypass sanctions through deceptive maritime practices. U.S. authorities say efforts to disguise ownership, change flags, or operate without identification will not prevent enforcement.
